BACKGROUND
Salem, Masachusetts, 1692. The setting for the true and infamous Witch Trials and the tragedy that occurred within the Calvinist community. After 8 months of terror the Salem witch trials ended, with 20 innocent people dead and land that nobody would touch for over 100 years.
Salem, a Calvinist community whose belief was Predestination – Election – Salvation – a belief that the fate of individual souls was predetermined by God. God had made up his mind from the start who would be saved, “the elect” and who would be damned, “the wicked.” They believed the history of the world followed God’s will.
The play will be staged in period, Salem Massachusetts, 1692.
Deemed one of the most powerful plays of the 20th century with strong characters, both young and old. Salem is a closed community founded on Calvinist beliefs; a society of intolerance and a fundamental belief in one’s duty to God and submission to God’s will.

LIES AND LIES - Two Plays Based on a Web of Lies.
From Billy, the engaging, compulsive liar of Keith Water house’s “Billy Liar,” to Arthur Miller’s John Proctor in “The Crucible” who, in real life, faced death rather than live his life a lie, is quite a journey of so me 22 years for Everyman actor, David Aspden.
From a sell out, captivating performance as Billy when he first came to Everyman as a student from Preston, to the epic role of the real life story of John Proctor caught up in the Salem Witch Trials in Massachusetts, 1692.
Turmoil for Billy was created by a life of fantasy and lies, of women and dreams; for John Proctor life for him and his family became one of accusation and persecution, created by the fantasies and hysteria of the girls in his household and Salem.
Notorious in history, it is a powerful and emotional journey for both the actors and audience alike, as the accusers and the accused face the ordeal of what has become known in history as The Salem Witch Trials.
Gerry Watson was the first director to cast David in an Everyman production, and now directs him again in the seminal role of John Proctor.
Everyman’s production of The Crucible is simply not to be missed.
