What are Club Nights?

The title Club Night was commonly used in the fifties and sixties by organizations in order to exploit a loophole in the law. The loophole allowed night-clubs and theatre companies to put on shows that were deemed not fit for public or theatre audiences as instructed by the Lord Chamberlain’s department. The performances had to be put on for free and only for the benefit of friends and members of the company. Many well known plays like John Osborne’s A Patriot for Me started life in this manner.

The origins of Everyman’s own club night season stem from that period and the name club night (or clubnight) has remained ever since. Club nights are free for anybody to attend and you don’t have to be a member. They are held every Wednesday at 8:00 pm at Chapter Arts Centre, Market Rd., Canton, Cardiff, from September to May unless otherwise stated.

Much Ado About Nothing is a sharp, smart and farcical comedy about a showdown between the sexes and what it takes to make love happen. The play contains elements of love, villainy, friendship, parent/child relationships, society and customs and uses tragedy, melodrama, comedy and farce to produce a true classic which is timeless in its appeal.

Those auditioning will need to prepare a short speech [not much longer than a minute] from any Shakespeare play of your choice.

Director’s  thoughts on the production:

‘The initial concept of this production [subject to change] places the action in and around 1940’s ‘’Messinsa’, a place where Allied troops and American GIs hit town with the expected frivolity that follows ...

In short, my direction centres on two things – the script and the audience. All good actors know that the process is only as good as the end result. My experiences have led me to direct using many styles. I love working with actors and always look for good ideas from a cast during rehearsals. Collaboration is encouraged but never at the expense of the final piece. Much Ado is a wonderful play. It has comedy, romance, drama, music and song ... we’re on to a winner before we even start! I look for actors who not only welcome the challenge of finding the meaning in text but will play as a team.

MUCH ADO pretty much demands a cast to work together. It’s important to have high expectations of actors but that doesn’t mean we don’t have fun in rehearsals. I am looking forward to this production very much!’
