What are Club Nights?

The title Club Night was commonly used in the fifties and sixties by organizations in order to exploit a loophole in the law. The loophole allowed night-clubs and theatre companies to put on shows that were deemed not fit for public or theatre audiences as instructed by the Lord Chamberlain’s department. The performances had to be put on for free and only for the benefit of friends and members of the company. Many well known plays like John Osborne’s A Patriot for Me started life in this manner.

The origins of Everyman’s own club night season stem from that period and the name club night (or clubnight) has remained ever since. Club nights are free for anybody to attend and you don’t have to be a member. They are held every Wednesday at 8:00 pm at Chapter Arts Centre, Market Rd., Canton, Cardiff, from September to May unless otherwise stated.

Auditions will be held in groups of 6 [maximum]

Each audition ‘slot’ will be for 1½hrs; times - 2pm, 3.30pm and 5pm.

During each audition ‘slot’ those auditioning will be given scenes to read out and to stage.

Winnie the Pooh is an adaptation by Glyn Robbins of the well-loved children’s books Winnie The Pooh and The House At Pooh Corner by A.A. Milne. The setting for the play is a nursery where Christopher Robin is ill. His father makes up stories about the toys in the room – they come alive and the whole play opens out as we find ourselves in the 100 Aker Wood. Incidents include An Expotition to the North Pole and When Piglet was Entirely Surrounded by Water.

The characters are rather like in last year’s Toad of Toad Hall – except they are much more gentle and not as hard or edgy. They need to be believably the well-loved characters that the children will have had read to them.

As with last year there will be a lot of songs – but again these are of a more gentle nature eg Cottleston Pie. There might even be one choreographed number!

The play will be set in 1926-28 when the novels were written.
